  • Firefox Users Engage Congress: SOPA Strike Stats

    Alex Fowler
    19 Jan 2012 | 4:22 pm
Yesterday, we blacked out the default start page in Firefox and redirected visitors to the Mozilla sites to a special action page. We also sent direct messages to members of the Mozilla community through multiple online channels. All these steps were aimed at informing and mobilizing millions of people on the poorly drafted anti-piracy legislation – SOPA and PIPA – pending in Congress. The result: Mozilla reached over 40 million people who, in turn, generated 360,000 emails sent to Senators and Representatives in Congress. Here’s the breakdown of the stats from…

Starting at 8:00 am Eastern tomorrow, Mozilla will join with other sites in a virtual strike to protest the Protect IP Act (PIPA) and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). These bills protect content at all costs, creating the opportunity for abuse and damaging the Web for all of us. We will be blacking out the default start page in Firefox and redirecting key Mozilla websites to a special action page. Both steps are aimed at informing and mobilizing millions of our users on this important issue. Mozilla’s Chairwoman Mitchell Baker has a blog post that further explains our concerns with the…

The ESR version of Firefox is for use by enterprises, public institutions, universities and other organizations that centrally manage their Firefox deployments. Releases of the ESR will occur once a year, providing these organizations with a version of Firefox that receives security updates but does not make changes to the Web or Firefox Add-ons platform. We have worked with many organizations to ensure that the ESR balances their need for the latest security updates with the…

  • Pancake: A new project from Mozilla Labs

    Stuart Parmenter
    27 Jan 2012 | 10:00 pm
What is Pancake? Pancake is a new Mozilla Labs project focused on exploring, evolving and expanding how we search, browse, navigate, organize and discover amazing things on the Web. To do this, we’re creating an app — a usable prototype that we’ll share and iterate on rapidly through an ongoing series of experiments. We want to better understand what people do on the Web, why and how they do those things, and how we can make those things easier and more efficient. We’re playing with some huge concepts, monumental problems and occasionally crazy ideas. We’ll be looking at what tools…

Crashes, hangs, assertions and various security problems, such as memory safety problems, are discovered through fuzzing [2]. Thousands of bugs in Mozilla applications have been found using fuzzers. In particular, 3 of the fuzzers have been responsible for more than a third of critical security bugs. Drop by on Monday, January 30, at 1pm Pacific Time in 10 Forward, where we will host a brown bag session sharing a high-level overview on how fuzzing is used to discover these issues and how…

    27 Jan 2012 | 6:23 pm
I’m hacking on some tool that indexes the localizable strings in our apps. One of the fall-outs could be a glossary tool, i.e., which terms in Firefox, Thunderbird, etc should localizers bother to get consistently translated. Which raises an interesting question, where do you draw the line? What’s a good metric to use to define a glossary? Are there glossary-based applications that don’t need a cut-off at all? Insights welcome.

  • PIPA/SOPA and Why You Should Care

    mitchell
    17 Jan 2012 | 11:03 pm
Congress is considering the most talked-about copyright legislation in a decade, known as Protect IP (PIPA) in the Senate and Stop Online Piracy (SOPA) in the House. Today, Mozilla announced that we’ll join with other sites in a virtual strike to protest PIPA/SOPA. SOPA makes all of us potential criminals if we don’t become the enforcement arm of a new government regulatory and policing structure. SOPA does not target websites serving up unauthorized content. SOPA does not target people accessing those websites. SOPA targets all the rest of us. These costs are significant,…
  • User Sovereignty for our Data

    mitchell
    13 Jan 2012 | 11:18 am
Our Internet experiences involve more and more data about us. Some of this data we create ourselves.  Sometimes our friends and acquaintances create it, and sometimes the services we use create data about us. On one hand this enables all sorts of exciting new applications. On the other hand, there are some very disconcerting aspects to the explosion of personal data. The ability of big data and cloud service providers to monitor, log, store, use, correlate and sell information about who we are and what we do has huge implications for society and for individuals. Right now there’s no…

For each MozCamp I gave an opening talk that touches on: what mozilla is, our key goals a bit of history about what we’ve done so far to meet our goals what we’re working on today what we should be doing in the future to meet our goals. I’ve embedded the opening talk from MozCamp below. It’s a video, but the audio is the important part. It’s about 40 minutes long, so it’s not a set of sound-bites and it may seem slow-paced.   It is however,…

  • End of Firefox Support for Windows 2000

    27 Jan 2012 | 5:20 pm
For a number of years we've held off on updating our Windows toolchain to a newer version of Visual Studio, and in so doing preserved support for Windows 2000 and Windows XP RTM and SP1. Firefox developers and the 99.6% of our Windows users have paid a price for this support, though. Our developers have not been able to take advantage of new compiler features and have had to struggle to keep valuable optimizations from breaking -- including having had to back out and ultimately delay some important new features like SPDY. Our users have have suffered a slower Firefox than would be possible as…

    23 Jan 2012 | 1:29 pm
The first public version of the browser called "Firefox" -- a 0.8 release, came out 8 years ago. With that release and the 1.0 release later that same year, we showed the world that browsers mattered. Innovative new features like tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, spell-checking, integrated search, and browser add-ons, re-invigorated not just the browser market, but the entire Web. We put users in control of that mess of windows, and the horrible pop-ups from advertisers and malware makers. We made it simple for users to customize their experience and to find what they were looking for without…
  • Personal Data is the Currency

    23 Jan 2012 | 12:18 pm
Personal data is the currency of today's digital market, and like any currency, it needs stability and trust. Only if consumers can 'trust' that their data is well protected, will they continue to entrust businesses and authorities with it, buy online, and accept new services. That's from EU Commissioner Viviane Reding, speaking at the DLD Conference in Munich. I think the final sentence there takes an optimistic view on users' understanding of the issue, but I hope that we can build a Web where something like that will be obviously true to everyone. Ms. Reding's proposal for new regulations…

This was something I did not at all experience when trying to contribute to other open source projects. Some areas are more…
